Nonprofit Board Leadership

Gain intensive foundational training in nonprofit board leadership and acquire the necessary skills to accelerate your board leadership opportunities.

Presented by the UB School of Management’s Center for Leadership and Global Impact, the Jordan A. Daniels Nonprofit Board Fellowship combines formal training with an academic year of experiential board service at a local nonprofit organization.

You will:

  • Accelerate your potential for board service and related career growth
  • Develop an understanding of board governance, servant leadership, diversity and inclusion principles, and intercultural leadership through classes, interactive discussions, reflection and a self-defined action learning project
  • Cultivate an increased awareness of the realities, opportunities and rewards (personal and community-based) of participating on a nonprofit board and its related committees
  • Develop an in-depth awareness of the nonprofit industry and the populations served in Western New York
  • Expand your professional network
  • UB graduate students and select undergraduate students
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Hybrid (some requirements may be fulfilled online)
  • 1.5 credits each semester for a total of 3 credits
  • Attend and actively engage in all components of the foundational program, along with kickoff and wrap-up sessions
  • Attend required board meetings of your assigned nonprofit board (and committee meetings as identified) and explore ways to fulfill board needs in such areas as research, data analytics and comparative analysis, brainstorming, problem-solving, project work or other activities as determined by your board contact
  • Establish an action learning project that either demonstrates your application of knowledge gained through the foundational program or responds to a board opportunity/challenge agreed to by you and your board contact
  • Actively participate in monthly, facilitated group discussions and reflection exercises by contributing ideas and suggestions and sharing your board experiences
