The UB School of Management, in partnership with the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, hosted 25 students in June for the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession program, a mini summer camp for Western New York high school students.

“This program has offered students new perspectives and a great starting point for a career for more than 35 years,” says Lorrie Metzger, clinical assistant professor of accounting and law and COAP co-chair. “Seeing young people discover the diverse opportunities available in the accounting field beyond the stereotype of traditional bookkeeping is inspiring.”

Throughout the camp, students participated in breakout sessions, listened to guest speakers and participated in interactive activities that demonstrated the many career paths an accounting degree can offer.

One activity, a cupcake decorating exercise, helped students understand the cost components involved in running a business.

At an office visit to M&T Bank, students gained firsthand insights into the day-to-day work of accounting professionals at a Fortune 500 financial institution.

Metzger organized the program with co-chairs Mindy Elniski, LVBW LLP Accountants and Consultants, and Kole Gilchrist, BS ’17, MS ’18, Deloitte. Committee members included Michael Draves, BS ’93, executive in residence for accounting; Arlene Hibschweiler, clinical associate professor of accounting and law; Corey Kruszka, M&T Bank; Coren Mitchell, The Bonadio Group; Nichole Ruf, Drescher & Malecki LLP; and Alexis Weber, BS ’17, MS ’18, Tronconi Segarra & Associates.
