Ram Ramesh’s research spans economics of IT, conceptual modeling and database systems, operations and decision analysis. In particular, his contemporary works deal with predictive analytics of availability-aware cloud computing and high performance computing systems, design of service-level contract mechanisms in cloud computing markets, and predictive analytics of health information exchanges. Methodologically, his research is established in predictive modeling, mathematical programming and stochastic optimization. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Google, Samsung, Raytheon and Westinghouse, besides various U.S. military research programs including U.S. Army Research Institute, U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the U.S. Naval Training Systems Center.
Ramesh serves as an area editor for the machine learning area of INFORMS Journal on Computing and is a founding co-editor-in-chief of Information Systems Frontiers (published by Springer). He also serves on the editorial advisory board, Information Technology and Systems Network of Social Science Research Network (SSRN). Ramesh served as an editor of two volumes of the Annals of Operations Research on the theme "Interface between Operations Research and Information Systems." He also edited a special issue of the Journal of AIS on "Ontologies in the context of Information Systems" and an issue of CACM on "Distributed Mission Training Technologies: Emerging Frontiers in Training Systems." He has edited two research books, "Ontologies - A Handbook of Principles, Concepts and Applications in Information Systems" (published by Springer) and "National Security Research: Technological, Organizational and Policy Perspectives" (published by Elsevier).
Ramesh has published extensively on the research topics above. His publications appear in such journals as INFORMS Journal on Computing, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, ACM Transactions On Database Systems, ACM Transactions on the Web, ACM Transactions on MIS, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, Naval Research Logistics, Management Science, Communications of the ACM, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Journal of American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), and Applied Artificial Intelligence.
Ramesh served on the INFORMS Task Force on the creation and maintenance of OR/MS community-wide Internet services and the subcommittee on the Internet Student Union Digital Library. He is a founding board member of AIS SIG on ontology-driven Information Systems (SIG-ODIS) and a board member of AIS SIG on Semantic Web and Information Systems (SIG-SEMIS). Ramesh was a general co-chair of the Workshop on Information Technology and Systems (WITS), Paris, 2008. He also served on the board of WITS during 2008-2011. He served as general co-chair of the joint IEEE Computer Society/ACM SIGMOBILE conference, "Virtual Enterprises and Pervasive/Mobile Technologies: An Academia/Industry Workshop on Research Challenges and Frontiers." Also, he regularly served on the program committees for several academic conferences such as WITS, CIST, WEB, IEEE-ISI, ISIS and many more.
Ramesh was a co-PI in an extended grant from Samsung Corp. to design and execute a series of chief information officer training programs in IS/IT for Samsung executives worldwide. He has served as associate director of the Center for Excellence on Global Enterprise Management at the University at Buffalo (a joint venture between the School of Engineering and School of Management) and as associate dean for research in the School of Management. He was elected and served on the board of directors of Infotech Niagara, a society of CIOs in the Western New York corporate community. He designed, developed and implemented the dual-degree MS/MBA program at Bangalore, India, in collaboration with Amrita University and Hewlett-Packard. He serves as its program director since 2007.
