Functional Areas

Potential functional areas for internships may include the following:

Recruitment

  • Develop job descriptions and conduct classification analysis
  • Research optimal resources for advertising opportunities
  • Develop relationships with schools, staffing firms and government offices to complement recruitment
  • Prepare employment forecast, assist in establishing goals for hiring females and minorities
  • Develop a PC-based applicant tracking system
  • Develop company-wide "Job Opportunity Program" to inform employees of openings throughout organization

Compensation

  • Conduct job and salary analysis project
  • Develop a base salary structure to include the following:
    • Web and telephone survey of comparable jobs
  • Assist management ranking/grading positions based on job descriptions
  • Assist in developing proposal for annual salary review

Performance Appraisal and Training

  • Develop a skills inventory database to track and improve training and development
  • Revise performance appraisal and job evaluation systems
  • Design and develop a video training program for employees and rewrite existing training materials as a complement
  • Write and edit the employee handbook
  • Conduct exit interview analysis
  • Develop an MBO workshop for managers

Grievance/Negotiation/Union Activity

  • Research and analyze labor agreements and wage trends within local area, New York State and nationwide
  • Develop background information for upcoming contract negotiations
  • Plan, develop and assist in conducting Affirmative Action seminars
  • Analyze trends and factors leading to grievance activity
  • Contract negotiation to include the following:
    • Identify needs of the organization, trends in settlements and cost of contract changes
  • Interview supervisors to assess needs and prepare drafts of contract changes

Benefits and Employee Assistance

  • Investigate potential for development of ergonomic work stations to reduce cumulative trauma syndrome
  • Develop health awareness program: research and implement alternatives such as cholesterol screenings, health education seminars, etc.
  • Analyze workplace accidents, including lost time and then participate in the following:
    • Develop improved methods of safety based on statistical analysis
    • Work with Safety Action Group on teaching methods for accident prevention
  • Research and develop an employee tuition assistance program
  • Conduct an analysis of the workforce disability program (who elects it, which carriers do they choose, reasons for disability)
