At the UB School of Management, we envision a world of transformational leaders who change society for the better — and with partners in more than 17 countries, we’re equipping both new and established leaders with the skills they need to do so.

The school’s Global Programs Office and our Center for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness (CLOE) offers a series of programs for students at our partner institutions abroad, empowering them to become more effective leaders in any team, organization or community. In addition, School of Management students may participate in some Global CLOE programs as volunteers or mentors, helping them to forge connections across continents and gain insights into other cultures.

Global Leadership Program

Global Leadership is an international collaboration between the School of Management and strategic partners and universities abroad. The yearlong program enhances the skills of graduate students from partner universities, including analytical thinking, self-reflection, creative problem-solving and interpersonal relationships, giving them a competitive advantage in the job market.

In this program, the School of Management is now bringing together students from across UB and from more than 20 universities around the world to network, advance their skills and make a difference. Students are selected to participate in the program by their university faculty. The one-year virtual program begins with a weeklong orientation in August, followed by monthly meetings throughout the fall and spring semesters, and a week of seminars in January. The program culminates with the option to attend CLOE’s annual leadership conference in person.

Throughout the program, students lead, empower and grow with one another, while honing critical skills, including how to maintain professionalism in a virtual environment. Participants from each country also work together on social impact projects and participate in research with UB faculty. Meanwhile, previous graduates from the program act as peer mentors, enhancing the experience for participants and allowing the mentors to put their leadership training into action.

In additional to social impact, program participants also examine the role of sustainability, capacity building and entrepreneurial leadership. UB’s formal association with the United Nations Department of Global Communications allows scholars to engage with pressing global issues.

So far, more than 180 students have earned a digital micro-credential badge by completing the program. 

Emerge Africa Conference in Ghana

At Emerge Africa, 220 business leaders and students from across Africa and the U.S. came together in Ghana for a conference dedicated to empowering attendees to emerge as drivers of sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship and visionary leadership — all key areas from the School of Management’s strategic initiatives.

Leadership Training for Traditional Leaders

In Ghana, queen mothers have historically been the custodians of the West African nation’s culture and customs, assisting chiefs in the administration of their communities. But today, more and more women who might once have served as queen mothers are taking on the role of chief themselves — a responsibility that demands focused leadership training.

In partnership with two nongovernmental organizations in Ghana — the Boresah Royal Foundation and OBAAPA Development Foundation — CLOE and the Global Programs team host virtual conferences on cultural leadership and community engagement. During the event, experts from UB and the NGOs share best practices to help traditional leaders, like queen mothers, drive change in their communities.

Through our partnership with the University of Professional Studies, Accra, we have more opportunities for joint engagement than ever before. The Otumfuo Center for Traditional Leadership is well-positioned to enhance and expand these partnerships in training through the collaboration with CLOE.

Leadership Empowerment Academy Program (LEAP)

Global Leadership developed out of its parent program, the Leadership Empowerment Academy Program, which is a collaboration between the School of Management and the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. In LEAP, students and leadership at the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast Technical University, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology receive professional development training through either in-person or virtual sessions. Workshop topics include intelligence in leadership, the leadership challenge, leading with purpose, and leading with a growth mindset.

More than 500 global participants have earned a CLOE certificate from completing the program.
