More than 45 UB School of Management students embraced the challenge of the new Wealth Management and Tax Strategy Case Competition, a weeklong experience hosted by the UB Accounting Association and sponsored by Andersen in February.
Designed as a beginner-friendly introduction to tax strategy, the competition challenged students to think beyond the numbers and creatively address real world issues in tax. Faculty advisor Cassie Nguyen, clinical assistant professor of accounting and law, supported the UB Accounting Association in planning and executing the competition.
Teams had one week to conduct research and to develop the case analysis and recommendations that they presented to judges from Anderson: Christopher Spiegelman, BS ’90, managing director, alternative investments, and Gary DiGabriele, BS ’14, MS ’15, tax director, private client services.
“We were so impressed by the UB School of Management students’ preparation, professionalism and creativity throughout the competition,” said Spiegelman. “Each team brought thoughtful analysis and strong presentation skills, which made for a dynamic and engaging event. It’s clear that UB is developing top talent, and we are excited to continue building connections with such motivated future professionals.”
Among the 11 teams of first- and second-year students, Jason Chen of Queens, Daniel Glickman of Highland Mills, Vincent Chen and Toby Chen of Buffalo comprised the winning team.
The competition highlighted the talent of UB’s future accounting leaders, while reinforcing the importance of industry partnerships in providing hands-on learning opportunities.
