Internet Expert to Speak at UB School of Management

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Internet expert Hsinchun Chen, McClelland Professor of Management Information Systems at the University of Arizona, will speak at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in 104 Alfiero Center on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.

Chen’s free public lecture, “A Path of Exploration in Information Systems Research: From Artificial Intelligence and Digital Library, to COPLINK and Dark Web,” will be the inaugural event for the University at Buffalo School of Management’s Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series.

Chen received an MBA from the UB School of Management in 1985. In addition, he holds a bachelor's degree from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan and doctorate in information systems from New York University.

An acclaimed information technology expert, Chen is director of the Artificial Intelligence Lab, founding director of the Hoffman E-Commerce Lab and director of the National Science Foundation’s COPLINK and BioPortal Centers at the University of Arizona.

Chen’s COPLINK system, which has been quoted as a national model for public safety information sharing and analysis, has been adopted in more than 550 law enforcement and intelligence agencies in 20 states. COPLINK research has recently been expanded to border protection (BorderSafe), disease and bioagent surveillance (BioPortal), and terrorism informatics research (Dark Web), funded by the National Science Foundation, CIA and Department of Homeland Security.

The Dark Web project, in collaboration with selected international terrorism research centers and intelligence agencies, has generated one of the largest databases in the world about extremist/terrorist-generated Internet contents (websites, forums and multimedia documents). Dark Web research supports link analysis, content analysis, web metrics analysis, multimedia analysis, sentiment analysis, and authorship analysis of international terrorism contents.

The UB School of Management’s Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series is designed to bring alumni with considerable research success back to campus to share their knowledge. It is anticipated that the school will host two alumni speakers per year.
