BUFFALO, N.Y. — A team of University at Buffalo School of Management sophomores came out on top in the inaugural Undergraduate Case Competition, held April 7 on UB’s North Campus.

During the event, 40 undergrads, divided into 10 teams of four, were tasked with analyzing and developing a plan for sustained growth for streaming giant Netflix in today’s competitive on-demand marketplace. After all teams delivered their initial presentations, the judging panel narrowed the field to two finalist teams, who faced off in the second round later that day.

The winning team, which shared a $400 prize, was made up of Milad Ghanatios of Rochester, Justin Rooney of Rochester, Ashley Silva of Syracuse and Stephen Southworth of Syracuse.

Coming in second was a team of juniors representing the UB chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honor organization for financial information students and professionals. William Chan of Brooklyn; Dong Hwan (Aiden) Lim of Seoul, South Korea; Sheldon Lip of Brooklyn; and Sangrok Lee of Daegu, South Korea, won $200 as the second-place team.

Judges included professors Dianna Cichocki, Debora Grossman and David Murray, along with adjunct instructors Marc Adler and Scott Ptak, and Keith Stolzenburg, executive in residence for accounting.

“It was an honor to be part of this inaugural event,” Cichocki says. “Opportunities like these help our students continually improve their analysis and presentation skills. Kudos to the organizers, and congratulations to the winning teams.”

The Buffalo Undergraduate Consulting Club and UB DECA hosted the competition, with additional sponsorships from the UB Financial Management Association and the UB School of Management Alumni Association.
