Student Recruitment Policy

Be aware of the expectations....
Review the policy here.

Many employers collaborate with the Career Resource Center and schedule a campus visit to interview and recruit candidates for employment at a later date. For example, a company will often conduct interviews in October or November to hire candidates for employment after graduation in May or to hire candidates for summer internships.

Students learn of these employment opportunities by closely monitoring opportunities available on BizLink.

Interested candidates can upload their résumé to their documents section of BizLink for each position posted. This enables you to customize your résumé for each position. Students are able to save multiple résumés. Instructions for the application process are included in each job posting. The résumés are forwarded to the employers once the deadline has passed. Résumé due dates are listed on each posting.

Employers pre-select which candidates they wish to interview during their scheduled campus visit and notify candidates (through a BizLink email). Notifications can be sent anywhere from two to 10 days before their visit.

BizLink will send an email to those students who have been selected to interview. No notification is sent to students not selected for on-campus interviews.

Selected students sign up for interview time slots through BizLink. Students are responsible to communicate with the CRC regarding whether the interview is in-person or virtual, be prepared for the interview and dressed professionally for the time and date scheduled. For in-person interviews, it is recommended that the student arrives at least 10 minutes in advance; for virtual interviews, it is recommended that students log onto the interview platform at three minutes in advance.

Key points regarding campus recruitment:

  • Candidates must upload their résumé and follow any remaining application instructions for each position by 11:59 p.m. on the résumé due date. This includes applications collected through BizLink, the company, or both.
  • If additional materials are requested (personal data sheets, transcripts, etc.), instructions for submitting them will be included in the job posting.
  • Most employers participate in on-campus and virtual recruitment to maximize the efficiency of their hiring process. Therefore, unless specifically requested in the job posting, do not include a cover letter for on-campus recruitment. (Note: It is appropriate, however, to include a cover letter when applying for an immediate opening).
  • NOTE: Students who do not show up for an on-campus interview will have their BizLink accounts suspended until further action is taken.

If a job opportunity is listed as a résumé collect, the process is very similar to the on-campus process above. The Career Resource Center collects résumés from students and forwards them to employers. The difference is that employers will interview selected candidates at an employer-designated location or using a virtual platform and will contact candidates directly.

For regular job opportunities, employers typically seek candidates who can begin work as soon as possible. But some employers will post positions well in advance of graduation. Read the job posting carefully for start date information. If employers want an immediate start, candidates should apply only if they are less than four to six weeks away from graduation, or if they are flexible to start a new position while still attending classes. Interested candidates submit résumés, cover letters and any other requested material through BizLink for immediate consideration. Mailing addresses, contact names and titles and special requirements are listed on individual job postings. Companies may contact those candidates they wish to interview. The CRC does not coordinate on-campus interview schedules when a position is listed as a regular job posting. In addition to full-time positions, job postings can also be part-time and internship opportunities for students to expand their marketability.

Employers who wish to build a campus presence often hold information sessions for students. Candidates can receive valuable information about employers and prospective permanent and summer positions by attending these sessions. This information often gives candidates an added advantage when they interview with that employer and it's a great opportunity to meet and network with professionals from that company. Employer Information Sessions may be sponsored by student organizations, the CRC, or both. While most sessions are open to all interested students, some are open only to candidates selected to interview with that employer. Postings for employer information sessions can be viewed through the Events tab in BizLink. For candidates who have been selected to interview with an employer, it is strongly recommended that you attend an information session for that employer, if one is being held.

Oftentimes, an employer who has held an employer information session or who is looking to recruit a very specific student concentration area will hold an employer-in-residence session. These programs are typically 20-25 minutes with no more than six students in attendance and are meant for meaningful conversation about the company and specific full-time and internship opportunities that are open. Postings for employer-in-residence sessions can be viewed through the Events tab in BizLink and require advance reservations. Sessions are held in a CRC conference room or via a virtual platform.

NOTE: Students who do not show up for employer-in-residence sessions will have their BizLink account suspended until further action is taken.

The Career Resource Center (CRC) strives to serve all School of Management students consistently and effectively throughout the job and internship recruiting process. Each UB School of Management student is expected to abide by all policies and expectations as described in this document.

Expectations for Professional Behavior

  • The CRC expects all students to exhibit consistent and courteous professional behavior along with strict adherence to our policies as they relate to our expansive menu of career services, including but not limited to: 1:1 advising appointments, career fairs and networking events, on-campus/virtual/off-campus interviews, workshop sessions, experiential learning activities, and employer programming.
  • Communication is key to recruitment; it is expected that if an employer reaches out to a student in any step of the recruitment process, the student will respond in a professional and timely manner. If a student is unsure, has questions or needs assistance in responding, please contact your career advisor.
  • The CRC reserves the right to investigate complaints by participants of our services. If a complaint is determined to be justified, the CRC has the right to report it to the School of Management’s Dean’s Office and the University’s Office of Academic Affairs, accordingly.
  • Any act of unprofessionalism that causes the CRC to question a student’s ability to interact with employers and positively represent the UB School of Management may result in suspension of CRC services.

Use of AI in Career Development

  • Students are responsible for ensuring that any use of AI supports—not substitutes—their career journey and development. This includes AI interviewing tools which prompt live responses.
  • While the use of generative AI tools is encouraged, we strongly recommend that all output created by these tools is thoroughly reviewed for accuracy as these tools have the ability to generate content that can be misleading or totally inaccurate.
  • Falsification or embellishment of resumes, social media, interview responses, cover letters, etc. is considered lying and may affect your reputation as well as that of the School of Management. Using AI tools in this manner is entirely unacceptable, and ultimately could impact your ability to be hired.

On-Campus or Virtual Recruiting Policies

  • Any student selected for an on-campus interview and not interested must decline the invitation to interview in BizLink and must notify the CRC immediately via reply email upon receipt of the invitation, as other students may be eligible.
  • Any student canceling or trying to re-schedule an on-campus interview must contact the CRC as soon as possible before the interview. This courtesy enables the CRC to contact the recruiter with schedule changes.
  • Any student who misses a scheduled on-campus interview without providing notice is in violation of CRC policy and may lose access to BizLink until a formal letter of apology is received.

Off-Campus Recruiting Policies

  • Any student contacted by an employer to schedule an interview must respond to that employer within 24 hours or within the employer’s expected response time to either accept or decline the interview.
  • Any student scheduling an interview at an employer location is responsible for attending that interview.
  • Any student who misses a scheduled interview at an employer location without providing a minimum of one business day’s notice to the employer is in violation of CRC policy. A business day is defined as a day between Monday and Friday, normal operating hours, excluding public holidays and weekends.

Reneging and Rescinding a Job or Internship Offer

  • Your acceptance of an internship or job offer is binding. Do not accept an offer, even verbally, until you are certain you are committed. Once you have accepted the position, you are “off the market” and should stop searching.
  • Accepting multiple job or internship offers simultaneously is highly unprofessional. Once a student has accepted a position (either verbally and/or in writing), it is essential to remain committed to that decision. Reneging on a job or internship offer or continuing to search and interview after accepting a position is unethical.
    • Reneging is defined as going back on (withdrawing from, breaking, or revoking) a promise, undertaking, or contract.
  • Once a student formally accepts an offer that would put them in a position to renege on the original acceptance, they are no longer eligible to interview for CRC posted opportunities.
  • To avoid reneging, students with a pending offer, but expecting another are encouraged to request an appropriate amount of time to consider the first offer, consult with a career advisor and communicate professionally.
  • We recognize that exceptional circumstances may arise (e.g. personal emergencies, significant changes in academic or career goals). In such cases, students should contact the CRC immediately to discuss the situation confidentially and without judgement.

Failure to Comply with the above stated policies and expectations can result in suspension of CRC services, on-campus recruiting eligibility, and/or BizLink privileges. Students may request to reinstate privileges by contacting the Recruitment Coordinator in the CRC for instructions.

The CRC is committed to promoting proactive career exploration and development with life-long strategies for individual career success. As such, the CRC can provide support throughout the job and internship search process. Appointments to meet with an advisor can be made by calling the office (716-645-3232) or by logging into BizLink.

There are additional ways in which employers look to build their brand both on-campus and virtually. All employer recruiting events and opportunities within the School of Management can be found in BizLink. In addition to the Career Resource Center, which serves School of Management students and employers exclusively, many opportunities are available to School of Management students through UB Career Design Center (259 Capen Hall on the North Campus). We strongly urge you to register with the Career Design Center through Handshake (Bullseye) to broaden your options and to avoid missing valuable opportunities.
