Russell Van Coevering, MD/MBA '17
Enhance your world-class clinical training with advanced management education to become a sought-after health care leader.
Maximize your medical education investment with an MBA. The School of Management and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences offer a five-year program leading to both an MD and MBA.
You may qualify for the Dawn Gideon Foundation Dawn Gideon-Huron Scholarship, awarded to women who self-identify as Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic or Native American or have demonstrated a commitment to health equity and who are pursuing a master’s degree in healthcare administration and/or business administration.
The collaborative program reduces by one full year the usual four-year MD program and two-year MBA program. As an MD/MBA, you must meet the degree requirements of each program, except for the reduction in total credit hours.
Apply to the MBA program during your third year of medical school. The following fall, you will enroll and take MBA core and elective courses. In your final year, you will concurrently take your fourth year of medical school and remaining MBA electives and capstone, for a total of five years.
Apply separately to both schools. Applications do not have to be submitted concurrently. For specific program timeline and curriculum, consult with our Graduate Programs Office before applying.

The MBA is a 60-credit degree. Depending on the collaborative degree arrangement and curriculum requirements, approved coursework from the partner program may be applied toward MBA requirements, with a maximum of 15 credits eligible to count toward the MBA. As a result, students may complete as few as 45 MBA credits through the School of Management while earning the full 60-credit MBA degree.
Depending on the policies and curriculum requirements of the partner program, selected MBA coursework may also be eligible to satisfy degree requirements in the partner degree. This integrated approach reduces the total coursework and cost of earning both degrees while preserving the full academic strength of each program.
